Spring Fishing Is Here!!!!!

It’s mid February, and the shops are starting to fill with inventory from the many brands we carry.  I for one, am always excited to start seeing the shop evolve from the winter items to the spring items.  I am responsible for most of the preseason orders that make their way into the shop throughout the year.  The process for this sometimes starts 8-9 months before we ever see the items start coming off the delivery trucks.  When I start seeing the spring shipments start rolling in through January and February, I know that even with winter storms in some of the forecasts, that spring is right around the corner.

The back half of January this year was snowy/icy for us in the south.  In and around our area, we really only had one big event, but just the prediction of weather makes the streams seem sleepy as anglers seem to stay warm and cozy at the house or cabin.  If your willing to layer up and get out on the river, these days can be really productive with less pressure on the streams and rivers. The days can be surprising, with numbers of trout.  We have had reports in early February of total daily fish numbers in the teens to as many as 35-40 fish to net.

Looking at the long range 14 and 30 day forecast for the area.  We are starting see those early spring temps starting to break through.  Some of the daily highs are predicted to be 65-72 degrees, which could get some top water action fired up not just on the valley streams and rivers, but some of the creeks that originate from high elevations.  I know the groundhog predicted 6 more weeks of winter, but for us here in the Smokies, we are looking at an early spring for fishing.

So for me, whether it be through the inventory making its way into the shop, or catching trout on top water in mid to late February, SPRING FISHING IS HERE!!!!!

Patterns to consider:

Mop Flies, Pats Rubber Legs, Black Caddis, Midges, Small Perdigons, BWO, Soft Hackles, Streamers, and (it might sound crazy) Hopper Dropper Set Ups.
