Introducing...

I wan to take this moment to introduce the newest member of the Tuck Fly Shop Crew. Myself, Bobby and Jack welcomed Chris Maney to the staff recently. Chris will be a full time guide for the shop and when he is not on the water will be sharing some knowledge in the shops. Chris is a native of Sylva and graduates from Western Carolina University this coming weekend. Chris was quick to get to work and put together a nice blurb to get us all excited for Summer in the Smokies. Enjoy.

Summer Time in the Mountains

As I ride to Cullowhee in my car, I look down and see that the thermometer reads 86 degrees. Seeing the green in the trees and the almost guaranteed daily afternoon shower only one thing comes to mind. Finally summer is upon us here in Western North Carolina and it’s an exciting time for locals and tourists alike. The campgrounds and cabins will soon begin to fill up, and the breweries nearby will be packed nightly. The buzz of all the summer festivals in Bryson City and Sylva has began to emerge, and with greening up the mountains just occurring the anticipation is high. There is something in Western North Carolina for everyone. There’s only one group summer might be more exciting for, fly fisherman.

The mountains are home to large number of small cold-water streams that provide great fishing opportunities as the tuck begins to heat up and the delayed harvest season begins to end. Deep Creek, located only a few miles from our Bryson City location is a shop favorite for a day on the water searching for wild trout. With the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as our backyard, the streams are plentiful with some of the prettiest scenery and fish in the United States its hard not to enjoy. Wet wading and dry flies will be the name of the game, and the fishing community is excited for the change in weather. If trout fishing doesn’t get the heart rate up, the smallmouth fishing here in the mountains is an exciting alternative that almost every fisherman and woman will enjoy. Throwing streamers at some of the hardest fighting pound for pound freshwater fish around will not disappoint in making the hands shake. If fishing for trout and bass in mountain streams is on the short list for the summer, be sure to give Bryson City and Sylva North Carolina a look because it’s sure not to disappoint. Don’t forget to swing by the shop and say hey and get the latest hot flies and stream reports! As always, tight lines and we hope to see you on the water!
